Winnipeg Gets It

As reported by The AV Club

In most cities around the world, Brian De Palma’s 1974 rock opera-ish The Phantom Of The Paradise is a cult classic, appreciated mostly by self-proclaimed cinephiles with a taste for over-the-top strangeness. (As our own Ignatiy Vishnevetsky describes it in a piece recommending the film: “[Phantom Of The Paradise] represented the pinnacle of Brian De Palma’s undisciplined early excess: a smorgasbord of camp, Grand Guignol, and bird imagery that thumbed its metal beak at commercial considerations.”) In Winnipeg, Manitoba, however, it was a box-office sensation, and is still a pop-cultural touchstone on par with Star Wars.

This documentary premieres on July 12, and you can bet your bastard ass I’ll be seeing it as soon as possible.

Ready Or Not?

This looks fun! Careful, this is the red band trailer.

READY OR NOT follows a young bride (Samara Weaving) as she joins her new husband’s (Mark O’Brien) rich, eccentric family (Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell) in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival.

What Say You, Kubrick Fans?

I read Doctor Sleep a few years ago and liked it okay. Maybe the movie won’t suck, I dunno. It’s somewhat reassuring that the director is Mike Flanagan, the same guy who helmed Gerald’s Game and The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix. There’s already a backlash on the Internet (because of course there is) for leaning heavily into Kubrick’s film – but I get it.

Me? I’m cautiously optimistic.

Puppet Show And Spinal Tap

Glad to see these guys still get along.

The cast of the cult classic “This Is Spinal Tap” reunited at the Tribeca Film Festival 35 years after the release of their project and chatted with TODAY’s Harry Smith to discuss the origins of the film, its impact on “mockumentary” style cinema and how they built a 17-year history of the characters before filming.

Hell Yes

Judging from this trailer, IT Chapter 2 looks to be another faithful adaptation of the book.

I’m fired up!
