That Thing I Say About Talented People? Still True

I should probably explain that Westworld is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies, at least from the Seventies. It inspired The Terminator (and most likely Halloween) and was the first film to reference computer viruses, if I’m not mistaken.

Behold, Westworld’s Gunslinger … as portrayed by the great Yul Brynner. At Monsterpalooza, we chat with sculptor Nick Marra about his amazing portrait of the character. This silicone sculpture not only captures Brynner’s likeness, but is mechanized to reveal his true robot face in spectacular fashion. Draw!

WordPress 5.0

WordPress 5.0 was released yesterday, and with it comes the new Gutenberg editor. Fortunately, we can run the Classic Editor plugin for a little while longer, but eventually, we’ll have to use Gutenberg. Here’s a video to get you up to speed. It seems fairly intuitive once you get your head around block design, so maybe we can make the move soon.

There’s also a page on the WordPress site where we can practice with Gutenberg before flipping the switch. See what you think.

Movie Crush Podcast

Not sure how you bastards feel about podcasts or which ones you fancy, but I’ve gotten into this one pretty hard in the last few days.

Movie Crush is an interview show where Chuck Bryant from Stuff You Should Know sits down with your favorite people to talk about their favorite movie. Simple enough, but what we get is much more than that. It’s a look at what makes a favorite thing, and why someone’s favorite movie says so much about who they are. More conversation than interview, Movie Crush, at its heart, is about the love affair we all have with the silver screen.

About the Host

Chuck is the co-host of the long-running Stuff You Should Know podcast. Born and raised in Atlanta, he spent time in New York and LA working in the film industry before returning home and eventually starting his career as a podcaster. Since then, SYSK has grown into one of the biggest podcasts in the world and Chuck has found himself as an “accidental” veteran of a new medium. In his spare time, Chuck likes to hang out with his wife and daughter and play in his “old man band” El Cheapo.

Recently, Chuck’s co-worker Casey joined him for a three part series on the genius of Stanley Kubrick. He and Chuck dive deep on Casey’s pick for part one, The Shining. Hit play and settle in …

John Byrne, Legend

I was a huge John Byrne fan growing up, so this is pretty dang cool.

More About John Byrne: John Lindley Byrne (born July 6, 1950) is a British-born, Canadian raised, American writer and artist of superhero comics. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on many major superheroes, with noted work on Marvel Comics’ X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise, the first issue of which featured comics’ first variant cover. Coming into the comics profession as penciller, inker, letterer and writer on his earliest work, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also served as penciller and inker). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He scripted the first issues of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing. In 2015, Byrne and his X-Men collaborator Chris Claremont were entered into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.
