Great interview. Mott The Hoople got the Sweet Jane chords right. Mick Ralphs’ lead guitar is pretty amazing. I didn’t know anything about the Velvet Underground when I bought All The Young Dudes, so for a few years I thought “Sweet Jane” was a Mott song.
We used to pull this one out if we needed one more song at the end of a set, probably playing it wrong.
Yeah, that was a standard we’ve-run-out-of-songs option for one of my bands as well. Along with the godsends: “Roadrunner” and “Sister Ray,” two and three chords respectively, playable in any condition and for any length of time. By that time everyone would be too drunk to notice how bad it sucked, the girls could keep dancing, and the bar could keep selling drinks. Seems like every punkish bar band in the country was covering “Road Runner” for a while.
