without The Portsmouth Sinfonia.
This has nothing to do with Xmas, but while I’m in full assault mode, here’s the great Florence Foster Jenkins having at Mozart’s “Queen of the Night” aria from The Magic Flute.
Tales of True Adventure for Rugged Men Not Unlike Yourself
Brutal.
“amateur soprano” LMAO
– as told to Kurt Vonnegut by a kindly archaeologist
FFJ was an interesting case. It’s still not clear whether she knew just how bad she was. She gave many recitals, and many outstanding musicians loved to hear her mess things up. Some people were not able to stifle laughter. She either played along with the joke or didn’t notice all the laughter.
The pianist in that recording is a real pro. He does an amazing job following her wretched timing.
I didn’t see the film, or even recall it coming out, but I bet it’s decent. We may need to watch it for Bastard Book Club.
[not technically a book, but somehow still apt]
I’m in. I didn’t know about the movie either; found out about it when I did a YouTube search on FFJ and something with Meryl Streep came up.
