Broadcast

Any of you bastards heard of them?  Someone put me onto them last night.  They were active from late 90’s to around 2011, when their singer passed away after catching H1N1 on tour.  This song’s from their first album, The Noise Made By Peoplewhich is good.  If you took Forever Changes, removed the Hispanic influence, added some delightfully creepy synths, and brought in a fifteen-year-old Nico to sing, then you might have something like this album.  Or not.

Update from the rabbit hole: this one, from second album, sounds like Silver Apples, but with a far better singer.

New Memphis Power Pop

Delayed by the pandemic, of course. Your Academy is a Memphis supergroup of sorts, made up of likeminded middle-agers. I think the video’s been up a year but the vinyl is new. What a set of pipes on that Brandon McGovern! (I’ve always loved his voice.)

I Will Rock Your Ass With My Flute

I like these guys!

  • They’re called Jethro Tull, but I’m not sure which guy is Jethro Tull
  • The singer is Ian. He must be related to the Monty Python “It’s” guy but I should research that some more.
  • If you’re going to rock a flute, institutional escapee is the right aesthetic for sure. He’s Scottish, so I don’t know if that means it’s a fife instead of a flute. Probably someone will tell me. I don’t see any bagpipes anywhere.

Musicians!

I’m ready to discuss Peter Jackson’s Beatles event when you are. I liked it a lot, although I felt like it dragged a bit through the middle. What say you, bastards? What was the most surprising revelation?

I Can’t Hardly Wait

The official Get Back trailer dropped yesterday! Check it out, you ol’ dirty ol’ bastards.

The official trailer for #TheBeatlesGetBack is here! The Disney+ original docuseries, directed by Peter Jackson, will be arriving on Disney+ just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Made entirely from never-before-seen, restored footage, it provides the most intimate and honest glimpse into the creative process and relationship between John, Paul, George, and Ringo ever filmed. Be sure to check them both out, and don’t forget to watch “The Beatles: Get Back” when it rolls out over three days, November 25, 26, and 27, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.

Bill, Post Cowsills

https://youtu.be/JzDKWKY62So

Sickeningly talented dude. Bill Cowsill was in Blue Northern from 1977 until they broke up in 1982.

Cowsill moved from Calgary to Vancouver as of 1977, and became a fan of the local band Blue Northern. He began sitting in with the band on a regular basis, and not long after he became a member. In 1979, the group released Blue, a four-song, 12″ EP. Two of the songs were written by Cowsill, who also produced the record. The band’s self-titled album was released on Polydor Records in early 1981, and was co-produced by Cowsill. The band broke up in 1982, notwithstanding continuing public interest, as well as Juno Award and Canadian Country Music Award nominations.

The Blue Shadows was his band from 1992 to 1996.

In 1992, Cowsill became the co-lead singer, with Jeffrey Hatcher, of The Blue Shadows. Cowsill and Hatcher became known for their Everly Brothers-like harmonies. Cowsill regarded his association with The Blue Shadows as his most positive experience as a musician, to that point in his career. In 1993, The Blue Shadows were signed to Sony and released their debut album, On The Floor of Heaven receiving positive reviews. The group found itself at the forefront of a Canadian Alt.country movement. In 2005, Cowsill stated that he considered the title track to the album to be the best song he had ever written.

I’m down the rabbit hole …

Blood Harmony

I haven´t listened to the podcast yet, but have been thinking about the concept a lot. Even when relatives sing the same line without harmonies, it´s a great double track. And with harmonies, magical. Some of my favorites:

Let´s not leave out twins:

And any excuse to mention Mother Maybelle, June, Anita, Helen:

At UT Hootenanny! Did they ever play with Renfield?

Charlie Could Not Be More Enthusiastic

Woo-hoo! I’m just in it for the youtube comments.

This new Wes Anderson film looks great.

With a little more practice these guys might have really made it.

I’m sure you’ve all watched this twenty times but it was new to me. Great video quality.
