What Goes On In Your Mind

I’ve been binging on documentaries lately, and this looks like another good one. I got into the VU around the same time I was getting into R.E.M., so it was kind of like listening to the student and the teacher at the same time. I mean these guys, and Nico + Warhol, were pretty out there, but they put together some good records.

I never really was big on Lou Reed solo, in fact, my dumb ass didn’t even know he was in the VU until a few years later.

  1. Ooh, thanks!

I’m not a huge Lou Reed fan, but Transformer is outstanding, as is New York. Oh, and Metal Machine Music, of course.

  2. Walk on the Wild Side was my introduction to Reed. I saw him live at Amnesty 1986, before I had ever heard of the Velvet Underground. And just like you, got into VU after I was into R.E.M. Possibly after reading the Fricke interview with Michael Stipe where he called the Beatles ¨elevator music¨and talked about their more powerful influences, including the VU.

  3. Looking forward to watching this. I also came to the VU backwards. Never heard a thing about them until I got into Bowie in late ’72; articles about him would mention them and Lou Reed. I dutifully bought Transformer when it came out because Bowie and Mick Ronson produced it. I liked it OK, but I was disappointed because I expected it to sound more like the Spiders or Bowie’s other current clients, Mott the Hoople and the Stooges. It grew on me over time. VU albums were pretty hard to find back then, as their cult was still in its infancy. It probably wasn’t until ’77 when I finally dove in.
