Marshall Crenshaw kind of fell off my radar during the past decade or two, then I ran across some cheap and decent copies of his first two lps in a store last week. I’d forgotten how strong those albums are. I’ve always liked how this song bridges the double verses with a false start of the chorus. A clever tactic. I’m sure other songs have done it, but for some reason I’m drawing a blank trying to think of one.
Me gusta!
I couldn’t think of any songs with exactly that same phenomenon, but it did bring to mind I Saw Her Again Last Night. There’s a false chorus that was a messed up punch-in by the sound engineers. They left it in because it sounded cool.
And the false start to I’m Looking Through You.
Again, not the same thing.
I asked our good friend Chat GPT, which was fun because it gave me very wrong answers until I started fine-tuning the questioning. One song it came up with was Billie Jean. It was sort of technically correct in that the initial chorus is more extended than later versions. But not quite a fake-out.
I appreciate Chat GPT’s enthusiasm, as my increasingly pointed and frustrated requests were always met with a cheerful “Certainly!” or “I see what you mean…”
If AI ends up wreaking havoc upon humanity, I have no doubt it will remain relentlessly cheerful while doing so.
A Power Pop Hall of Famer for sure. I got to see him do a solo acoustic show once, which was fine, but I really wanted to see him with a full band (and would still like to). Do you remember that he played John in Beatlemania, and was Buddy Holly in La Bamba?
I remember about Beatlemania and La Bamba, but I never got to see him solo or with a band. Would be a good show for sure.
