We Can’t Rewind / We’ve Gone Too Far

I have to say I watched a fuck-ton of MTV in its first year. I thought it was the greatest thing ever until it wasn’t. This is pretty fun to watch the first day’s broadcast (43 years ago today!). Also, everyone knows Video Killed the Radio Star was the first video, but what was the second?!

Also, Atari ad around 27 minutes in!

  1. MTV was super exotic to me as only a few of my friends who were fancy enough to get cable had it. Usually the same people who had HBO. Which was also amazing to my young brain.

Chrissie Hynde looks and sounds great.

  2. I wouldn’t have guessed Pat Benatar, Rod, and the Who for 2-4. I remember early MTV as heavier on post-punk. Maybe I just watched it late at night.

  3. Yep, I can still recall my friend Steve Schwartz stopping me in the hall between classes to tell me there was now A WHOLE CHANNEL like HBO’s Video Jukebox that only played music videos. I was in the seventh grade, and suddenly, it felt like we were living in the future.

Hearing that station ID music now with the moon walk animation hits hard.
