Wye Oak Covering The Kinks

YouTube wanted to remind me that I once watched this, a performance of “Strangers” by Wye Oak for The A.V. Club’s Undercover series 13 years ago! Holy shit, time is flying. Anyway, it’s lovely and Jenn Wasner is a badass. Enjoy or don’t, you weekend-destined bastards.

  1. Lovely.

They said they picked “Strangers” in part because “Paper Planes” was taken. I looked that one up: had never heard the song despite 299M YouTube views. It’s beginning to dawn on me that I may not be very hip.

I also noticed that for some reason on Season 1 of Undercover, the song “Kokomo” made the list. Seemed odd to me, so I listened again and decided I was right, it’s pretty terrible. It in fact made the Ten Worst Songs by Great Artists list and has been called a “monument to mediocrity.” I wonder if it was put on the list as a joke.

  2. I saw Wye Oak last summer at Merge. They were good.

Yeah, Kokomo reeks, but enough people like it that it pops up every now and then. I’m guessing that “parrot heads” are susceptible .
