I once found myself in the funny predicament of playing in a power pop band that was locally misclassified as punk simply because we didn’t play “Free Bird,” or any other such songs with thirty-minute guitar solos. We did cover the Damned’s “Fan Club,” but that was one song. I got a laugh over such generally nice, upper middle-class southern boys getting called punks.
I’d guess most bands playing punkish music were posing. Nothing wrong with that. Posing has produced a lot of great music.

I had the pleasure of meeting John Darnielle on a flight out of San Diego a few years ago. Super-chatty, and just as friendly as you would expect. I told him I was a huge fan, but got nervous and forgot to mention that I like his novels, too.
