I Will Rock Your Ass With My Flute

I like these guys!

  • They’re called Jethro Tull, but I’m not sure which guy is Jethro Tull
  • The singer is Ian. He must be related to the Monty Python “It’s” guy but I should research that some more.
  • If you’re going to rock a flute, institutional escapee is the right aesthetic for sure. He’s Scottish, so I don’t know if that means it’s a fife instead of a flute. Probably someone will tell me. I don’t see any bagpipes anywhere.

  1. Fifes are shorter, higher pitched, and used for Village Idiot dance music. Leprechauns enjoy dancing to them as well.

Jethro Tull were very good at writing rock riffs. There’s the song above, and this one. Very catchy riffs. Here they are, pre-fame, on Rock and Roll Circus. It seems to me that Ian Anderson pioneered a type of singing that Eddie Vedder adopted, where vowels are sung as if the singer has a mouth full of chewing tobacco. That’s not necessarily an insult; it can be effective. But that type of singing did get old and annoying after all grunge singers who weren’t imitating Kurt Cobain started imitating Vedder.

  2. If there’s one thing that will give you an edge over Metallica for the grammy for best metal album, it’s a good flute solo. I was really into Jethro Tull my senior year of high school. I always thought if Fagan from Oliver Twist made a band, this would be it.
