The Brothers Smothers

I can’t imagine how these damn commies would offend anyone, but then I have a soft spot for irreverent bastards. You can watch the documentary Smothered and learn how they got canceled.

Also, the tune vaguely reminds me of “Wild One” by Those Darlins. I’m sure I posted this many moons ago on Ye Olde Blogge. I’m going to re-indulge this great performance by Nikki Darlin et al.

  1. Thanks, that doc just went to the top of my list. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was an oasis. I remember seeing The Who, The Doors, and several others for the first time there. I also watched the first US airings of the videos for “Hey Jude” and “Revolution” there. If I remember correctly, each one aired on consecutive weeks. Exciting times.

I remember that the show was controversial, but I was too young to care about any of that. Col. Renfield was still on active duty, but he never had a problem with our watching it.

  2. I enjoyed the documentary. The show was before my time, and I had forgotten/not known that Steve Martin, Rob Reiner, etc were involved.

I did, however, watch a bazillion episodes of Bonanza in syndication. So I appreciate the Sunday night juggernaut they were up against.
